According to legend, when the Kokūzō-dō (main hall) was being rebuilt after being damaged by a great earthquake about 400 years ago, a herd of strong red-haired cattle appeared from nowhere. They helped the black cattle that were struggling to transport large timbers, and thanks to their efforts, the main hall was successfully reconstructed.
Later, these hardworking red cattle came to be called “Akabeko,” meaning “red cow,” and were cherished by many people as symbols of good fortune and prosperity.
Why not try creating your own unique "original Akabeko" with a painting experience of the folk craft "Akabeko"?
