Regarding Reciprocal Links with the Website “The Phantom Highway: Hachijūri Kaidō”

The Tadami Line Management Office is promoting initiatives to share the appeal of the communities along the railway line.
In light of the planned opening of National Route 289, also known as the Hachijūri-goe Highway, scheduled for between autumn of Reiwa 8 (2026) and summer of Reiwa 9 (2027), we have decided to establish reciprocal links between the official website “The Phantom Highway: Hachijūri Kaidō” (https://www.hachijurigoe.jp/) and this portal site.

The Hachijūri-goe Highway has a long history as an important route connecting Niigata Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture since ancient times. It was once used for travel between the Minami-Aizu region and Echigo, but because it crosses an area of extremely heavy snowfall and is a very rugged route, it gradually declined as a highway with the development of railways and road networks.
Later, in 1970 (Showa 45), it was designated as a national highway to allow vehicle traffic, and construction has continued to the present day. For this reason, it is known as a “road that connects history and culture.” Once opened, it is expected to become a new route for exchange and tourism linking the areas along the Tadami Line with the Niigata side, generating great anticipation.

With this background in mind, through reciprocal links between the two websites, we will share the appeal of both the Tadami Line and the Hachijūri-goe Highway, and work to promote regional exchange and tourism use.
We invite you to visit both websites and explore what they have to offer.
